Films from Jean-Luc Godard at Ballina Film Club
David Byrne and the big suit in Stop Making Sense
Ballina
Film Club’s annual celebration of a key, influential film
artist returns this year with a four-week programme of films by Jean-Luc Godard beginning June 5.
One of the original founders of the highly-influential French New Wave
movement, Godard wrote the blueprint for a whole new kind of chic cool on
celluloid. Over the course of four weeks, Ballina Film Club will screen some of
the auteur’s finest films including the iconic Breathless and
the incredibly moving Slow Motion. Also included are Bande a parte (the Godard film for
non-believers).
Later in the summer, the film club are
set to go again with Sound + Vision: In
Concert! Celebrating Music in Film
(30th July – 4th August).
This year the focus is on
classic concert movies covering all the bases from Lou Reed: Live at St. Ann’s Warehouse to Jonathan Demme’s Stop Making Sense. U2 get a look in with Rattle and Hum while the king, Elvis
: That’s the way it is, also makes an appearance. Finally Scorsese’s seminal
concert film, The Last Waltz, gets the
nod in The Last Waltz- Live! when Dublin rock'n'roll
troupe The Group bring their own spin to The Band's magical farewell concert,
by creating the ultimate tribute to this sensational show.
