Born John Martin Feeney, John Ford was the ambitious son of Irish immigrant parents who came from the west coast of Ireland. Throughout his 60 years working in Hollywood cinema, the acclaimed director chronicled the history of the United States, and moreover the story of the American Dream and the Irish American journey.
Ford directed 137 films and worked on circa 80 other projects, documentaries & short films, and still holds the record for winning the most Oscars for his work as Director. His films continues to be admired by audiences around the world, with classics including: The Searchers, The Grapes of Wrath, Fort Apache, Rio Grande, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, Stagecoach, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and How Green Was My Valley. The Quiet Man with John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara remains an Irish favourite.
The inaugural John Ford Ireland Film Symposium takes place 7 - 10 June with a four day focus on film and filmmaking, inspired and informed by his timeless work. Highlights include a screening of the silent epic The Iron Horse accompanied by the RTE Concert Orchestra at the National Concert Hall, an interview with director Peter Bogdanovic who knew Ford as well as discussions and screenings of his films.
