Holy Motors : mask-terful or what?

VIEWING:SESSIONS 2012 - in a new time slot this year - has just revealed the first films to be selected.

Leading the way is Leos Carax’s Holy Motors, the film that divided critics most in Cannes this year. Odd is too small a word for this playful and mischievous ‘tour de force’ from the director of Les amants du pont-neuf and The Night is Young.  With performances from Kylie Minogue and Carax regular Denis Lavant, it’s certainly one you have to see for yourself.

The Hunt is Thomas Vinterberg’s new film with Mads Mikkelsen which examines what happens in a small community when one of its members is accusing of child sexual abuse.  Mikkelsen is excellent as Lucas, the accused teacher defending his innocence and his performance won him the Best Actor Award in Cannes.

We all love a French comedy so Untouchable, a slapstick, gleefully incorrect throwback to ’80s culture-clash comedies like Trading Places, which has been a huge box office success in its home country, is much anticipated. When millionaire Philippe is thrown together with Senegalese helper, Driss, the stage is set for some funny and acerbic misunderstandings.  En France,  they are asking, “Is this the new Amélie?” Decide for yourself.

Beasts of the Southern Wild comes trailing awards having won the Grand Jury Prize in Sundance followed by the always coveted Camera d'Or for Best First Feature in Cannes. A film that’s very hard to describe, it’s about a a six-year old girl named Hushpuppy who - when faced with her father's fading health and environmental changes that release an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs - leaves her Delta-community home in search of her mother.  Irish Times Film Correspondent Donald Clarke simply called it “stunning”.

VIEWING:SESSIONS 2012 takes place at the Belltable Arts Centre, + Cinema North West, Limerick from September 14 - 16, 2012.
